David Starts New Journey

June 24, 2016

From a high school student volunteering at the office to employee, David Suchite has come a long way at Center for Independent Futures. Now, David is taking the next step in his journey by starting a new job.

A recent graduate of Evanston Township High School, David received support from Center for Independent Futures at the Transition House. There, he learned the skills he needed to become independent and worked toward his goals with staff member Sharon Purdy. One goal stood above the rest.

“I remember sitting with Sharon when I first met her at the high school. I told her, ‘Ms. Purdy, my goal is to work at an office,’” David says.

During his time at the Transition House, David began volunteering at Center for Independent Futures once a week to work on projects and learn about working in an office. Soon, those volunteering hours turned into an internship, and David’s responsibilities expanded. In January 2016, David officially joined the staff.

As a staff member, David developed countless skills and built relationship with the entire community. Thanks to one of those relationships with a former Center for Independent Futures coworker, David learned about the opportunity for his new job as a full-time office administrator at a non-profit organization in downtown Chicago. He’s ready to take on the challenges of a new commute, new schedule, and new environment.

“The most important thing I learned here at Center for Independent Futures was to follow my dreams,” David shares. “Whether it’s a big goal or a small goal, I can accomplish anything I want.”

David’s goals now include getting his driver’s license and moving into his own apartment. His dream of becoming a social worker was inspired by watching Center for Independent Futures’ Life Skills Tutors supporting participants. His new job is just the beginning of a journey full of possibilities.

“Each staff member at the office has believed in me and has always told me I could do anything that I set my mind to do,” David says. “Thanks to Center for Independent Futures, I’m going to start a new adventure.”
