Participant Art Show

Community Art Show Featuring Participants’ Work

Questioning ourselves in myriads of ways is inherently a human trait—we love to explore and ponder what makes us tick, even when we don’t realize we’re doing so. The crux of humanity is in its exploration of self and others.

Lasting Impressions features work by artists from Evanston’s Center for Independent Futures. Over the course of six art-making sessions, the artists dove into how we view strangers, what changes when we become friends with someone, and what connects us as humans. Our conversations and thoughts became inspiration for the mixed media artwork shown here.

Through several kinds of art making—collage, assemblage, painting, and creating a collaborative book—the artists explored how the way we view others can change from first impressions to last, how strangers become friends, and how we fit into the world.

About Art Encounter’s Program with the Center for Independent Futures

Art Encounter has been partnering with Center For Independent Futures (CIF) since 2020, providing a Thursday evening art program to those they serve in the Evanston community. The program includes hands-on studio classes, outings to artists’ studios and galleries, public art projects, and culminating group art exhibitions. In addition to Lasting Impressions, the group will be creating a mural for the windows at the CIF headquarters later this spring with mural artist Molly Z. This program is partially supported by grants from the Illinois Arts Council and the Evanston Arts Council.
